Millie, the dog - owned by Emma Oakes went missing after breaking free from her lead in the town after Havant and was eventually tracked down on mudflats near Portsmouth, which were experiencing threatening high tides.

For four days, police, firefighters and coast guards tried to save but came up stumps after trying - what they thought - was everything, until someone thought of the pork-on-a-string method.

Chris Taylor, the head of the Denmead Drone Search and Rescue team told the Guardian: "One of the local residents on the beach where we were flying from supplied us with the sausages - I think they were from Aldi. The woman cooked them up for us and we attached them with string."

He continued: "If we hadn't... got her away from that area the tide would have come in and she would have been at risk of drowning.”

"It was something we had never tried before - the sausages were the last resort."

Chris thinks he might try the technique again if they need to.
