A key ally of the former US President told a jury in the investigation of his attempts to overturn the results of the presidential poll in Georgia that Trump's troubled state of mind meant that he would have believed anything that suggested that the election was rigged against him.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper, an unnamed juror described South Carolina senator Lindsey Graham as saying: "During that time, if somebody had told Trump that aliens came down and stole Trump ballots... Trump would've believed it."

Trump is bidding to return to the White House in 2024 and continues to push the false claim that his election defeat was a result of fraud.

The Atlanta publication interviewed five of the 23 members of the grand jury, whose report was made partially public.

Jurors described evidence not previously made public about a call where Trump tried to persuade the state House speaker, David Ralston, to convene a special session and overturn Joe Biden's victory.

The juror described how Ralston "basically cut the president off".

They recalled: "He said, ‘I will do everything in my power that I think is appropriate’ … He just basically took the wind out of the sails. ‘Well, thank you,’ you know, is all the president could say.'"
