The former US President is said to have been "screaming at everyone" in his inner circle and has even blamed his wife Melania for the underwhelming results.

Trump is expected to announce next week that he will run for the White House again in 2024 but the disappointing night for the Republicans has halted his momentum.

The politician was exasperated that many of the candidates he endorsed failed to win and is particularly incensed by the decision to make the celebrity TV doctor Mehmet Oz the Republican candidate in the Pennsylvania Senate race after he was beaten by Democrat John Fetterman.

A Trump adviser told CNN: "Candidates matter. They were all bad candidates."

The adviser added that a delay to Trump's announcement next week is unlikely as it would be "too humiliating".

Meanwhile, Trump has warned Florida governor Ron DeSantis not to run for president in 2024 after he won a landslide victory in the midterms.

He claims that his rival could harm the Republican Party if he stands and also suggested that he could release unflattering information about DeSantis - without providing further details.

Trump said: "I don't know if he's running. I think if he runs, he could hurt himself very badly. I really believe he could hurt himself badly. I don't think it would be good for the party."
