Carl Stewart, from Liverpool, shared an image of a block of Stilton on social media but left both his fingers and palm of his hand in the shot.

Merseyside Police were able to analyse his fingerprints after accessing the image using technology to crack the highly encrypted EncroChat on his phone. As a result, Stewart was sentenced to 13-and-a-half years in jail last week for conspiracy to supply cocaine, heroin, MDMA and ketamine.

Detective Inspector Lee Wilkinson said that Stewart had been "caught out by his love of Stilton cheese".

The officer said: "His palm and fingerprints were analysed from this picture and it was established they belonged to [him]."

Wilkinson added that officers expect to catch more criminals using EncroChat after identifying users through Operation Venetic.
