The owners of the Yaraka Hotel have barred local emus, Kevin and Carol, after they kept stealing items from customers.

A sign at the door reads: ''Emus have been banned from this establishment for bad behaviour.''

Landlady Gerry Gimblett admits the main reason the emus have been banned is because of their ''smelly droppings''.

She told the Guardian Australia: ''They've been stealing things from the guests, especially their food. They'd stick their heads in and pinch toast out of the toaster.

''But the main reason we've banned them is their droppings. They're enormous, very large and very smelly, and they created great stains.''
