Football matches could be played by holograms in the coming years

Kieran Maguire, an economics guru in the sport, has explained that club owners are expecting real-time projections of matches to be beamed simultaneously into stadiums across the globe in the next decade.

This will enable fans from New York to Mumbai to see computer-generated images of football stars while artificial intelligence (AI) could be used to create hypothetical clashes between iconic players such as Pele and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The beautiful game could imitate the success of ABBA's groundbreaking Voyage tour, which features virtual avatars and has proved successful since its launch in 2022.

Maguire, from the University of Liverpool, said: "ABBA Voyage - well it's coming to football.

"So if Chelsea are away to Manchester United, 20,000 Chelsea fans will turn up if you've got this purpose-built stadium and the technology is there."
