A packet of the traditional Scottish dish has taken to orbit in celebration of the holiday that marks the life of poet Robert Burns on January 25.

Butcher Simon Howie teamed up with space research firm Stratonauts to launch the haggis, which was attached to a weather balloon so it could soar 20 miles above Earth.

Howie hopes that the stunt will "lift the spirits of the general public" and revealed that he was thrilled "to take Scotland's national dish to new heights".

He added: "Burns Night is one of the most important dates on the food calendar for us and we wanted to mark the occasion by sending the UK's best-selling haggis, the original 454g, to the edge of space."
