The US president is in New York for the United Nations General Assembly and used his time in the city to hold a Broadway fundraiser for his 2024 campaign on Monday (18.09.23) night where he declared that he is standing again to protect the nation from Trump.

Biden told guests including Broadway stars Josh Groban, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Sara Bareilles at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre: "I'm running because democracy is at stake. Because (in) 2024 democracy is on the ballot once again. And let there be no question, Donald Trump and his MAGA Republicans are determined to destroy American democracy."

A fired-up Biden promised to "rally the world" in support of war-torn Ukraine and suggested that Trump would "bow down" to Russian autocrat Vladimir Putin if he returns to the White House.

The president declared: "I will not side with dictators like Putin. Maybe Trump and his MAGA friends can bow down but I won't."

Biden,80, also addressed suggestions that he is too old to run for the presidency again.

He said: "You may have noticed, a lot of people seem focused on my age. Well I get it. Believe me. I know better than anyone.

"I'm running because - hear this - I want the entire nation to join me in sending the strongest, clearest, most powerful message possible that political violence in America is never, never, never acceptable."
