Police in Fort Lauderdale were called to deal with the animal after it was spotted on a main street in the city.

Sergeant DeAnna Greenlaw explained how officers had to use a dog lead to try and coax the kangaroo into a police vehicle.

Officer Robert Norvis revealed that the creature was ''very friendly'' and did not resist being captured.

He said: ''I've been a police officer for 26 years and I've had snake calls, plenty of dog calls, maybe an alligator but I've never heard of a kangaroo around here.''

The creature, named Jack, belongs to Anthony Macias, who claims that the kangaroo escaped after he didn't close the gate properly in his house.

He told the South Florida Sun Sentinel newspaper: ''I guess he just punched his way through.''
