The first edition copy of Darrell Huff's 'How to Lie with Statistics' was posted to Newcastle's central library in November 1958, but should have been returned to the city's Fenham Library instead.

The book was returned with an accompanying note reading "Better late than never!!" but the identity of the person who returned it to the library is not yet known.

Library manager David Hepworth said that the returner "may have been worried about us sending them a bill".

Staff calculated that the owner of the book would have amassed £3,434, although all fines are capped at £15.

Hepworth told the BBC: "As much as we're pleased to have this book back, we're also pleased that it's sparked a bit of interest and people are talking about libraries and reading."
