Li Hua was released from a hospital in China last month following a year of treatment and four life-changing surgeries.

Li suffers from a condition called ankylosing spondylitis, a severe form of arthritis that affects his spine and knee joints. He eventually became so hunchbacked that his face was pressed against his legs.

Li now plans to look after his mother Tang Dongchen, 71, who has cared for him since her 40s and is looking forward to a comfortable night's sleep.

He said: ''I'm just very happy to be able to sleep lying flat again. I hadn't slept on my back for more than 20 years.

''The first time I saw my mother after surgery, I suddenly realised how much she had aged while taking care of me all these years.''
