While the nation loves the fluffy little cakes - which are typically served with jam, cream or butter - there is still a massive debate about to pronounce the word itself, and one passionate person has created a map that illustrates the ongoing divide over the issue.

The Reddit User Bezzleford - who made the map using data collected by Cambridge University researchers in 2016 - said: ''Anyone from the UK knows that the no.1 cause of family feuds is over the pronunciation of 'scone' (Except maybe what kind of treat this is or the great dinner vs tea).''

While he brilliantly created a UK map which tracks the spots where people say scone to rhyme with either 'cone' or 'gone', the creator is also interested in the debate abroad.

He said: ''According to wiki Canadians and Australians also pronounce them rhyming with 'gone' but I'd like to hear what other people have to say.''

The map reveals that there is a split of almost 50/50 on how to say the word. It illustrates that most of Ireland and pockets of Southern England and the midlands rhyme with 'cone' whereas huge area

Bezzleford added: ''I personally pronounce it rhyming with 'cone' even though my parents say it rhymes with 'gone.''
