Pink Star diamond sold for over £50million

A diamond has sold for £51.7 million.

''It's really extraordinarily rare. Very, very few of these stones have ever appeared at auction.''

The world's most expensive diamond, which is the size of a plum, has sold for 14.1 million pounds more than the book price of the stone.

The flawless 59.60 carat pink diamond, which was mined in South Africa, was sold to an unknown buyer last night (14.11.13).

It is the largest in its class ever graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Set on a ring, it measures 2.69 by 2.06 centimetres and weighs 11.92 grammes.

David Bennett from auction house Sotheby's said: ''It's really extraordinarily rare. Very, very few of these stones have ever appeared at auction.''

The sparkling oval-cut rock, which has received the highest possible GIA colour and clarity rating, was part of the auction house's Magnificent Jewels sale.
