Retired cattle rancher Dexter Kruger, 111, recently surpassed World War I veteran Jack Lockett as the nation's oldest ever recorded man and credits tucking into poultry brains for his longevity.

Asked for the secret to his long life, Kruger told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation: "Chicken brains. You know, chickens have a head. And in there, there's a brain. And they are delicious little things.

"There's only one little bite."

However, Dexter's son Greg, 74, suggested that the outback lifestyle that Dexter had led for much of his life was behind his remarkable lifespan.

Melanie Calvert - the manager of Dexter's nursing home in Queensland - said he is one of its "sharpest residents" despite being the oldest.

She said: "His memory is amazing for a 111-year-old."
