A video of the rodent filmed by an 11th-grade pupil quickly spread on social media among classmates at Atlantic Community High School in Delray Beach.
The clip - which was aired by news station WPTV - shows a large brown rat, and the Palm Beach County Schools said in a statement that the vending machine was quickly locked to keep students from using it.
The district says the company behind the machine was alerted and an exterminator was called to the school.
Student Kael Williams said the incident was particularly disgusting because students eat from that machine throughout the day.
Worldwide, rats and mice spread over 35 diseases.
