Holidaymakers have been warned of extreme high temperatures, with forecasters saying Spain and Portugal are set to welcome especially intense temperatures, and there's even the chance of breaking the current European record of 48C in Athens, Greece, in 1977.

UK Met Office meteorologist Luke Miall said: ''These sorts of temperatures are not only exceptional for the locals but people from the UK will never really have experienced them.

''Especially with it being the school holidays, and the very young and old being susceptible to heatstroke, we're advising tourists to keep out of the midday sun and protect themselves.''

The UK is set to experience temperatures of 31 degrees this weekend in London and the South East.
