Lillian Reynolds spotted the creature ambling along the road in the city of Charlottetown at the weekend, half a mile away from the nearest body of water.

She told CBC News: "I had to do a double-take because I just couldn't believe what I was seeing."

Reynolds explained how she called the police and ventured outside in a bid to keep the seal safe but found that the animal was not happy about her assistance.

She said: "He was, I think, probably cursing at me in seal language. He was quite upset, but I don't blame him. I would be, too.

"I just said, you know, 'We're going to take care of you, don't worry about it.' Then he was like 'arr, arr, arr' at me."

Police later arrived to wrap the seal in a blanket before returning it to the nearest shore.
