Police inspector Darren Taylor explained that his team were called after a male was reported waving the brush in the face of staff at the service station in Sussex.

He said that the incident came about as a result of a ''disagreement over social distancing and using the toilets''.

Taylor revealed that no arrests had been made but words of advice were given to those involved, although it remains unclear why the toilet brush was used as a weapon.

He added: ''How the toilet brush became embroiled into it we really don't know.''

Taylor also confirmed that the brush had been returned to its cubicle.
