Equestrian riders at the Olympics believe that the life-size figure placed next to the tenth obstacle of the Kamiyoga course may have distracted their horses during the qualifying session for the individual jumping finals earlier this week.

British rider Harry Charles said: "As you come around, you see a big guy's (butt). I did notice four or five horses really taking a spook to that."

Israel's Teddy Vlock and Ireland's Darragh Kenny were seen taking their horse to the tenth jump as they tried to familiarise the animals with the sumo statue.

Vlock said: "It is very realistic. It does look like a person, and that's a little spooky. You know, horses don't want to see a guy, like, looking intense next to a jump, looking like he's ready to fight you."
