The juvenile carpet python - which measured about 40 centimeters long - was found by Park Rangers on the Arnhem Highway in late March with a malformed skull and an extra eye protruding from the middle of its head.

The rangers who discovered the interesting animal just outside Darwin, Australia wrote on Facebook that the eye: ''likely developed very early during the embryonic stage of development.''

They also said it was ''extremely unlikely'' that the development of the extra eye was due to environmental factors as natural-occurring malformations are ''relatively common'' in reptiles.
