A new survey has found that 55 per cent of gym attendees do so to tackle either a short or long-term health condition, while two-thirds (66 per cent) revealed that exercise helps them sleep better at night.

The survey was commissioned by ukactive and the results have been disclosed as people across Britain prepare to either join or rejoin a gym as part of a New Year's resolution to improve their fitness.

Huw Edwards, chief executive of ukactive, said: "It's clear that more people are seeing the true value of being active and its role in leading a fulfilling life.

"It's reassuring to see people getting such crucial benefits from physical activity and more are now seeing fitness and leisure facilities as places in the community that can really help them look after their health and wellbeing."
