Peggy MacSween was resigned to never seeing the ring again as she picked potatoes in the Outer Hebrides in Scotland after it went missing as she was digging for potatoes with her late husband John on the island during the 1960s.

Her fellow islander Donald MacPhee recently set out to find it with a metal detector after a chance conversation with the pensioner.

MacSween said: "He just came to the door and said: ‘I have something to show you.' It was the ring.

"I couldn’t believe it, but there it was. I thought I would never see it again."

The 86-year-old recalled how she was shaking sand out of her gloves when the ring went missing and that she had given up hope of ever finding it.

She said: "I went out once or twice to look for it, but there was no way of finding it."
