French nun Lucile Randon - who assumed the name Sister Andre when she took holy orders in 1944 - passed away in her sleep at her nursing home in Toulon.

Randon was born in 1904 and lived through both world wars. She dedicated much of her life to Catholicism and saw 27 French heads of state during the course of her life.

A spokesman for the nun's nursing home, David Tavella, shared news of her death on Tuesday (17.01.23).

He said: "There is great sadness but... it was her desire to join her beloved brother. For her, it's a liberation."

Randon had been Europe's oldest person for some time but entered the Guinness Book of Records last year as the world's oldest person following the death of 119-year-old Kane Tanaka in Japan.

The nun also entered the record books as the oldest person to survive COVID-19 in 2021.

Despite being blind and reliant on a wheelchair, she cared for other elderly people often much younger than herself.

In an interview last year, Randon said: "People say that work kills, for me work kept me alive, I kept working until I was 108."
