The Woman in Black

The Woman in Black

Following the massive success of the film adaptation of the book, The Woman in Black is now the most successful British horror film of all time. At the box office it made more than 21 million in the UK and is this year’s biggest grossing film. It was responsible for removing the Harry Potter associations from Daniel Radcliffe and enabled him to play a more mature and wildly different role form that of the boy wizard. Given how popular the film was Hammer Films and Susan Hill are collaborating for a sequel.

The new story, Angels of Death follows on from the first book, however 40 years after the initial hauntings, which are set in the early 1900s. The story is being written by Hill to then be adapted for screen by Jon Crocker, however we don’t know yet if the first film’s director James Watkins will be involved in the project.

The film was made on a budget of 15 million and has taken a massive 120 million worldwide. Since the TV adaptation, it has been left untouched and it was time it was brought back to the forefront of everyone’s minds as one of the best ghost stories of all time.

The new tale is of a couple who end up residing in Eel Marsh House, the perfect combination for hauntings to once again manifest. It has not been confirmed yet if Radcliffe will be returning to do the sequel, given how long after the film will be set, as well as the original screenwriter Jane Goldman. Hammer are not strangers to sequels as they managed to generate nine Dracula films form the original franchise between 1960 and 1974, as well as the many spin offs of the Frankenstein and Mummy iconic horror characters.
