Barbra Streisand's role as Funny Girl to be recast

Barbra Streisand's famous role in Funny Girl managed to earner the singer a Best Actress Oscar, yet theater bosses are struggling to find the perfect star to follow in her footsteps.

Producers are planning on a remake of the hit 1964 stage show, which ran for three years on Broadway and originally starred Streisand as Fanny Brice - a role she reprised for the 1968 film adaptation.

Director Bartlett Sher has taken to the internet in a bid to find the perfect actress after admitting a huge struggle to find the lead role. He plans to stage new production in Los Angeles in the New Year before taking it to Broadway.

Glee star Lea Michele has previously been linked to the production after producer Bob Boyett admitted she was high on his list of contenders, but Sher suggests the actress is no longer in the running.

He tells the New York Times: "This is the hardest part I've ever had to cast."

And Sher has nw invited acting wannabes between the ages of 21 and 35 to submut their applications online.

An internet advertisment says: "The woman who will play Fanny Brice must have an unforgettably thrilling voice with a big range... and great comic skill, masking deep insecurity and pain. She is a once-in-a-generation talent, and must have excellent comedic timing."
