Rupert Murdoch was attacked yesterday as he answered questions from a committee about the News of the World hacking scandal.

Two hours into the inquisition, a spectator jumped over a railing and lunged at Murdock, attempting to slam a plate of shaving cream into his face.

Murdoch's wife, Wendi, who was sitting directly behind her husband, fought off the attacker, who called the mogul 'a greedy billionaire'. Cream managed to fall on the tycoon's suit. The hearing was halted for 15 minutes so order could be restored.

Police led the pie thrower, identified as Jonnie Marbles, away in handcuffs.

Murdoch and his son James were called upon to answer questions about the phone-hacking scandal, which prompted them to close the News of the World earlier this month.

During the parliamentary hearing, Murdoch, 80, insisted he was not responsible for the phone hacking controversy and offered, 'this is the most humble day of my life'.

Murdoch shut down the 168-year-old tabloid amid allegations to a private investigator working for the publication had illegally accessed voicemail messages belonging to royals, celebrities and the families of murder victims.
