Adam Levine and Lady Gaga have engaged in a Twitter war after Lady Gaga took offence to Levine's rant about an un-named musician "recycling old art".

The Maroon 5 singer posted cryptic tweets on the social networking site in which he blasted an anonymous star for "recycling old art" rather than producing original music.

Levine wrote: "Ugh..recycling old art for a younger generation doesn't make you an artist. It makes you an art teacher ... I unabashedly love writing and performing pop music for both myself AND everyone around me. That's It. It doesn't need any extra sauce."

Levine didn't actually name who he was referring to, but Lady Gaga took offence to the tweets andposted a response of her own  to her followers that said: "Uh oh guys the art police is here."

Gaga may be correct in assuming she was the target of Adam's rant considering her new music video features famous works of art.

Levine isn't the only musician to accuse Gaga of stealing from other works, recently Madonna said 'Born This Way' was a "redo" of her own track 'Express Yourself'.

Madonna had previously said: "I thought, this is a wonderful way to redo my song. I mean, I recognized the chord changes. I thought it was . . . interesting."
