Billy Joel helped clean a New York beach on Saturday (20.09.14).

The 'Uptown Girl' hitmaker arrived at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park by boat with Governor Andrew M. Cuomo for the 21st annual Oyster Bay Beach and Harbor Cleanup.

Along with others who joined the cleanup, Joel walked ashore carrying black garbage bags, which were to be filled by community volunteers and town employees who had joined the initiative.

Billy, who helped the politician seed oysters, dumping crates of them into the water, said: "It's good to see the support to keep the bay healthy.

"Our oysters and our clams that come out of this bay are the best."

The annual beach clean is organised each year by the Town of Oyster Bay, the North Oyster Bay Baymen's Association and Friends of the Bay.

Caring Billy, 65, recently donated all the profits from his Madison Square Garden birthday gig in New York to an animal shelter.

He was hailed a hero by Beth Stern - the wife of controversial US DJ Howard Stern - for donating proceeds from the show to help her with Bianca's Furry Friends, a facility at the North Shore Animal League America in the city that will provide a cage-free home for shelter cats and dogs.

She said: "Billy is my hero. Howard and I call him 'Saint Billy.' Because of his huge donation, we are on target to break ground next spring!"

Beth also revealed Billy, 65, and his girlfriend Alexis Roderick have adopted two rescue dogs.
