The '45 Years' star chose to act in a number of independent films rather than blockbusters as her career progressed but insists she has "done the best [she] can".

She told PEOPLE magazine: "I wanted to make more art house films, more independent films, films that perhaps were a little bit more difficult to make and certainly wouldn't necessarily put me on the Oscar trail. But, they're the films I chose to do.

"I've done what I've done, and I've done the best I can. Your life is what it is and your life is what you've made it. I can't really think back and say, 'Oh dear, I wish I had done it different' because I really don't want to do that."

Meanwhile, the 70-year-old actress recently came under fire for saying those who planned to boycott the Oscars over the lack of nominations for black people were being "racist to whites".

Apologising for her comments, she said: "I regret that my comments could have been misinterpreted this week in my interview with Europe 1 Radio. I simply meant to say that in an ideal world every performance will be given equal opportunities for consideration. I am very honored to be included in this year's wonderful group of nominated actors and actresses."
