The 70-year-old singer was disappointed to hear the businessman had beat Hillary Clinton to the White House.

Speaking to reporters as she left the Jacob K. Javits Convention Centre in New York City - where Hillary was holding her election night gathering - she said: "He's told us in so many ways who he is. He makes fun of people with handicaps. He's a racist. He thinks women are body parts. He only sees everyone as how they reflect him. We're just a mirror for him."

The 'Believe' hitmaker later took to Twitter to echo the sentiment, adding: "world will never be the same. I feel Sad for the young. [Trump] will never be more than the toilet, I've used as a symbol 4 Him. U Can't Polish [s**t]. (sic)"

Earlier in the day, Cher was hopeful that Clinton would win and dubbed Trump a "petty, vengeful coward".

She wrote: "MOM CANT BELIEVE,SHE LIVED LONG ENOUGH [TO] SEE A WOMAN BECOME PRESIDENT OF HILLARY'S GIVING MY 90YR Old MOM,HOPE. MY MOM IS SO PROUD OF HILL ...

"IF [TRUMP] WINS,HE WILL STILL BE WHAT HE IS NOW...A PETTY VENGEFUL,COWARD. AS GERMANY WAS IN THE 30′s, THERES AN ANGER,A RAGE, THAT HAS CONSUMED OUR AMERICA ...

"ask yourself, DID I DO ALL I COULD HAVE DONE. Its a good lesson. We [are] still [trying to] have hope ... SAW BREXIT RIP GB APART IN ONE NIGHT. Must [pray] (sic)"
