The 32-year-old pop star is separating from spouse Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini after just 18 months of marriage, but their relationship woes began six months ago.

During the time the union was heading to the rocks Simon, 56, was on hand as he worked with Cheryl on 'The X Factor' to give her support, and now the marriage has broken up the music mogul has been in regular contact with her from his vacation to ensure she's doing OK.

An 'X Factor' source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "Sadly, no one here is surprised to hear this news. Jean-Bernard never came down this year and we knew a split was on the cards. Simon and Cheryl have spent a lot of time together since the live shows started. He's been offering words of comfort. He cares for her a great deal and has been in contact even while on holiday to make sure she is coping.

"She did very well to carry on with the show as normal given everything that was going on in her life."

Cheryl has also been comforted through her heartache by her loyal Girls Aloud pals Kimberley Walsh and Nicola Roberts, while her brother has temporarily moved into her London home with her.

The 'I Don't Care' singer - who was previously married to England soccer player Ashley Cole - is said to be devastated that her marriage to Jean-Bernard didn't work out but accepts there was nothing more she could have done to save the relationship, which is believed to have ended in the summer.

A source said: "Cheryl is disappointed. But Jean Bernard never really fitted in and the writing has been on the wall."

Cheryl and Jean-Bernard married in a secret ceremony in Mustique in July 2014 after just a few months of dating.

One person who predicted the whirlwind marriage wouldn't workout was Jean-Bernard's dad - who passed away last year at the age of 66.

He didn't think his son would be suited to Cheryl's celebrity lifestyle and refused to attend their nuptials to make his feelings known.

A source close to the family in France said: "Bernard wasn't happy at all. He wanted JB to have a simple life and marry someone who wasn't a big star. He didn't go to the wedding."
