Cyndi Lauper has opened up about a sexual assault she suffered in the 1980s

The 'Time After Time' star revealed the incident in her 2012 book 'Cyndi Lauper: A Memoir' describing the horrifying moment a male musician and his girlfriend assaulted her with a sex toy back in the 1980s before she shot to fame - and she's now revealed she ran into him while she was out Christmas shopping years later.

Cyndi told The Times newspaper: "Years later, when I was famous, I bumped into him when I was Christmas shopping in Bloomingdale’s. He said, ‘Wow Cyn, you really did it.’ I didn’t say anything. He’s since passed away."

In her book, Cyndi wrote of the attack: "He grabbed it [the sex toy], and then two other people grabbed me. I ran away from them, but they caught me and pulled my pants off. And the guy took the dildo, and he used it on me.

"I couldn’t believe it was happening. I tried so hard to break loose and I couldn’t, because I was being held down by his girlfriend and her sister - and she was a big girl.

"I finally broke away. I was nauseated and in disbelief that it wasn’t just men- it was a guy and two women. I just could not understand why."

Looking back on the attack in The Times interview, she said of the incident: "What struck me was, ‘Why?’ And I realised, ‘Well, it must be about power.’ Then I asked his girlfriend why she helped, and she said, ‘Because I love him'."

After the assault, Cyndi continued working with the musician in a band because she didn't want the act to force her out. She added: "I was like? ‘Really? Really? No, I’m not going anywhere. That’s not what you’re going to do to me.’ What I didn’t realise was that I could have left and it would eventually have been fine."
