The 62-year-old host, who faced accusations of a toxic workplace culture earlier this year, thanked her "amazing crew and staff" of her eponymously titled show for making the programme happen as she collected the accolade at the virtual ceremony in Santa Monica.

She said: "Thank you, from deep down in my heart.

"The amazing crew and amazing staff who make this show possible.

"I love them all; I thank them for what they do every day to help that show be the best that we try to make it every single day.

"I say thank you to the people, thanks for all of my fans for supporting me, for sticking by me.

"I cannot tell you how grateful I am and what this means to me. It's more than I can possibly tell you. Especially right now."

Ellen had apologised in a letter to the staff of the show after a review of the complaints, which included racism, fear and intimidation, was conducted by WarnerMedia, which subsequently resulted in three executive producers leaving.

BTS were the big winners of the night, scoring four prizes for The Group of 2020, The Song of 2020 and The Music Video of 2020 for 'Dynamite' and The Album of 2020 for 'Map of the Soul: 7'.

Elsewhere in the music categories, Justin Bieber won The Male Artist of 2020, Ariana Grande was named The Female Artist of 2020, and Taylor Swift took home The Soundtrack Song of 2020 for 'Only The Young' from her Netflix film 'Miss Americana'.

Khloe Kardashian swiped The Reality Star of 2020 and 'Grey's Anatomy' was named The Show of 2020.

Ellen Pompeo was also was named The Female TV Star of 2020 for 'Grey's Anatomy' and gave a moving speech about "love and acceptance".

She said: "Our show is about love and acceptance, and winning this award is confirmation that people respond to those ideas.

"They respond to the idea of love, they respond to the idea of acceptance, they respond to the idea of us pulling one another up. ... 2020 has tested that time and time again and also proven that when we do that, when we look out for each other, when we pull each other up, anything is possible. So let's kick the rest of 2020's ass. Let's look out for each other, be responsible for each other, and love."

Jennifer Lopez, Tyler Perry and Tracee Ellis Ross were honoured with the most coveted trophies of the night, People's Icon of 2020, People's Champion of 2020 and Fashion Icon of 2020, respectively.

Before Jennifer gave an empowering speech about using her platform to inspire young girls around the world, the likes of Armie Hammer, Nicole Kidman, Renée Zellweger, and her kids - 12-year-old Emme and Max - gave sweet introductions to the 'On The Floor' hitmaker.

In her speech, the actress-and-singer said: "As a Latina and as a woman, sometimes we have to work twice as hard ... sometimes my big dreams and ambitions made the people around me nervous. People would say, 'You're a dancer, you can't be an actress ... you're an artist, you won't be taken seriously as a businesswoman.' The more they said I couldn't, the more I knew that I had to."

Tyler, meanwhile, gave an emotional speech in which he recalled being homeless and spoke of the importance of never giving up hope.

He said: "Had I given up when I was homeless, sleeping in my car, hungry, had I given up these people that you see on the screen right now wouldn't be part of my dream. There are people tied into your dreams and destiny, and you're worthy of getting to your goal. Keep digging. Don't stop."

The Demi Lovato-hosted ceremony also saw performances from the likes of Justin Bieber, who performed 'Holy' and Lonely', and Chloe x Halle.
