The former glamour model revealed that she considered taking her own life last year as she spoke candidly about her mental health struggles built up by the pressure of caring for her disabled 18-year-old son Harvey and her mother Amy's terminal illness.

Asked by presenter Stephen Nolan if she came close to breaking point, Katie told BBC Northern Ireland's 'Nolan Live': "I wanted to commit suicide.

"I planned it, I did everything ... Everything was on top of me, it was a build up.

"I'm only human, I'm strong but there's only so much you can take and I could have either committed suicide or got help."

The 42-year-old star revealed that it was the thought of her children – Harvey, 15-year-old Junior, 13-year-old Princess, Jett, seven and Bunny, six – that made her take action toward getting professional help.

Katie said: "Every time I went to do it I thought: 'I can't, I've got kids, sort yourself out', so I asked for help, got help and stuck to it.

"I went to The Priory for five weeks and I'm a brand new person now!"

Katie also revealed that her mother Amy, who suffers from lung condition idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, doesn't have long left to live.

She explained: "Now she's on oxygen, its hit home again. She's only got like 32 percent left of her lung capacity. So if you imagine now being that out of breath, it must be awful, and it's an awful way to go.

"It's horrible to see my mum go through it because she's so active, it's cruel."

Katie explained how her mum turned to the British Lung Foundation for support and advice, and was told about making the most of the rest of her life.

She said: "Just build memories, take lots of pictures, that's all you can do really. You know it's coming and have to learn to deal with it."
