The 67-year-old director and choreographer helmed the popular Disney musical trilogy - which launched the careers of Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale - but since the last movie back in 2006, fans have eagerly been waiting for the next instalment.

Kenny - who recently helmed 'Descendants 2' - has revealed that Disney is interested in making a new movie in the franchise but the director said it would be better bringing in a "new generation of kids" rather than bringing back the original characters.

Speaking exclusively to BANG Showbiz, Kenny said: "I think the Disney Channel and Disney Company are interested in doing a 'High School Musical 4', we'll just call it that right now, we all know that our cast has gone on, they have lives, they have careers. I don't want to say they won't be [returning] but what I would say is that our fans have to be open to us approaching it with some new actors.

"It's hard but I don't know if it would be possible to bring them all back to do a 'High School Musical 4', I would think we would be better off bringing in a new lot and starting a new generation of kids."

The third film saw the characters of Troy Bolton (Zac) and Gabriella Montez (Vanessa) and the rest of the cast graduate from East High School, Kenny joked that they could have been held back if the fourth movie went ahead.

He said: "You could do that they got held back in High School and Troy's still a senior! But on a reunion, I think you would have to get a rally to make that happen, you would have to have a lot of people on social media hitting their fists on the table. The power of the people."

Since 'High School Musical', Zac has gone on to have a hugely successful Hollywood career and has starred in a number of box office hits including 'Baywatch', 'Dirty Grandpa' and 'Neighbors'.

'Descendants 2' premieres on Friday 20th October at 5:30pm on Disney Channel.
