The 'Neighbours' star - who plays gay stripper Aaron Brennan in the long-running Australian soap - popped the question to his long-term girlfriend Sharn Norman on Christmas Day last year (25.12.15) but her reaction when he brought out the diamond sparkler wasn't one he had been expecting.

Speaking exclusively to BANG Showbiz, he said: "I proposed on Christmas Day. We had like a joint family celebration and I sort of brought out the ring as another sort of gift. And then she laughed at me and I cried. It's not meant to happen that way, is it? I was so nervous before I proposed. She forgot to say yes, I was like, 'You've got to say yes!'"

The couple are currently trying to make a long-distance relationship work - with Sharn based in Sydney while Matt shoots for the show in Melbourne - but the actor is convinced their romance works perfectly well.

He explained: "We speak every day. I think it's easy because we both know what we want, we're on the same playing field. I go back to Kellyville in Sydney quite a bit because my family are still there and it's only a one-hour flight. I love Melbourne, I think I could stay there for a while."
