The 31-year-old actor - who plays Emperor Peter III of Russia in the Channel 4 drama opposite Elle Fanning as Catherine The Great - has opened up on the two co-stars' more racy moments, and insisted they were "unromantic" on set.

He told The Times newspaper: "Those scenes are the hardest not to laugh in: I get the giggles, having the physical comedy on top of the weird conversations.

"But even though everyone wants to talk about the sex scenes, and there are a few, they are always undercut. The main focus of them is unromantic."

And Nicholas explained how the pair had an intimacy coach on site to choreograph the scenes.

He was also asked whether his parents had watched the programme due to the explicit scenes, and added: "My mum and dad were extras on the wedding day, sat in the crowd.

"I try to bring them out if it’s a fun day filming."

Meanwhile, Nicholas recently admitted he had to "play a trick" on his brain to shoot one of the nude scenes.

He said: "I remember reading the script and saying, ‘Aaaaargh, Tony, I’m not sure about this one.’ Because that hallway is long and busy; the hallways are where people hang out and mingle in the palace.

“We had a debate about how many supporting artists would come in that day. It was originally 70 people in the corridor. I said, ‘Can we get it down to about 30?’

“You have to switch off that part of your brain that’s saying, ‘I don’t want to walk down a corridor naked.’ You have to go: ‘All right. I’m Peter. And I feel so confident, and I’m so happy and enlightened, that I’m going to walk down this corridor naked. It’s an interesting trick to play on your brain.”
