Olivia Rodrigo reveals how her slight synaesthesia comes out writing music

The 19-year-old pop megastar has the bizarre condition - a perceptual phenomenon that connects sensory or cognitive pathways - and revealed the colours that popped into her head when penning her debut album, 'Sour', with purple being the most prevalent.

She told Vogue: “When I listen to songs, I’ll see colours.

“Lots of the songs on 'Sour' are purple.

“‘Driver’s License’ is purple, but ‘Good 4 U’ is like a purpley-blue.

“‘Jealousy, Jealousy’ is a bright red, ‘Deja Vu’ is like orange and pink and light purple.

“I like having purple as the cohesive colour throughout my whole 'Sour' era.”

Olivia is not the only famous musician with synaesthesia, fellow pop star Billie Eilish also has the condition.

Peculiarly, everything the 'No Time To Die' hitmaker does has to "sound like a certain smell".

Last year, the 20-year-old chart-topper shared: “It’s involved in every ounce of my life, and in everything I do.

“Every choice I make, fashion-wise, hair-wise and musically, I always want things to sound like a certain smell.

“I have a very, very, very strong and long relationship with scent.”

Meanwhile, Jack White recently hailed Olivia for introducing a whole new generation to vinyl.

The former White Stripes star and Third Man Records co-founder said: “I had the chance to meet a talented singer and musician today named Olivia Rodrigo.

“She’s very cool, very real and very much a lover of music. She’s also introducing another set of youth to the love of vinyl records as well. Respect.”
