The 54-year-old music mogul has given the One Direction singer, 23, a run down of what to expect as a new father and has offered his top tips for when he welcomes his first child into the world with stylist Briana Jungwirth later this year.

Speaking on 'Good Morning Britain', Simon said: "I just said enjoy it. If I had been his age and someone had said you're going to have a baby, I'm not sure how I would have coped with it but he did call me and I said when you've embraced it you'll be amazed how much you are going to love it and it will change your life for the better. And that's it."

The 'X Factor' judge welcomed his first child Eric into the world with his partner Lauren Silverman 20 months ago and has admitted he went through a stage where he thought the tiny tot "hated" him because he wouldn't respond to him.

He explained: "When he was about five or six [months old] I was like.... I just don't know what to do! Because he wasn't reacting to me and I thought maybe he hates me.

"And they said, 'No, take your time', because once he gets a bit older. And then suddenly one day they are talking, listening, responding, communicating, whole different ball game, and also they sort of become a bit like you, which I don't know is a good thing or a bad thing!"

Meanwhile, Simon was left heartbroken earlier this year when his beloved mother Julie passed away, but says he got over his loss pretty quickly because he still talks to her.

He said: "I deal with it because I always believe she is still here, same with my dad, you know, talk to them. I always feel their presence and I genuinely do believe in that."
