Pearl Lowe

Pearl Lowe is a delight to talk to. Fun, quirky and openly honest about all her plans, she chats away about her upcoming wedding, new clothing collection and her charity work. We caught up with Pearl to talk about her daughter, Daisy's achievements, why she's a little scared of the Honey Monster and all her vintage clothing secrets.

Hi Pearl! What have you been up to recently?

I've got a wedding to plan and that’s kind of taking over my whole life really! Yeah, I'm getting married on December 4th and I've also just designed a packet of Sugar Puffs- I've got that coming up next week, there’s a big launch in Harrods.

Yeah, I heard about that, is Daisy involved in that with you too?

Yeah, Daisy and I did a packet each. It was really cool to have the black version of the honey monster, he was great. I was really pleased to have him included. I've also just designed a new collection, which hits the shops next week as well. It’s a Christmas collection, so lots of glitter and very very studio 54, very glam. So yeah, I've been pretty busy! And I've also been doing up my house because you know we've moved into this house in Somerset and I've had to gut it and everything, but it’s looking like we've nearly finished, I mean we're so close to getting it done and finished, I can't wait.

Sounds like you're a multi-tasking lady at the minute!

Yeah, I am really at the moment and you know Danny’s been off touring, so I've kept busy.

Why are you putting your support behind Unchained Heroes? Is it something that’s pretty close to you?

It’s just a really cool thing to get involved in. I don't get involved with everything but I choose my things and this sounded like a good project to get involved in.

What shops have you suggested for Unchained?

Well, Annie's because of its unique 1920s dresses and The Cross for its beautiful picked furnishings and children's clothes. I like Story too, because it has everything from organic food to interiors, and then there is Coco de Mere in Covent Garden- they have the sexiest underwear and books in London.

Where do you like to shop?

Online! I live in the country though, so there is some incredible shops in Bath. I live about 20 minutes away from Bath and I like antique shops and vintage shops, they're my favourite. And there’s this lovely little shop there which is amazing, it does all this old lace. The woman has got the most incredible eye for picking out things, and I love markets too. Anything like that I love!

How did you get involved with the Sugar Puffs project?

I think they asked us to do it, yeah they asked Daisy first and then I heard about it and I was like oh yeah, that sounds fun.

Who has designed your wedding dress, or is that a big industry secret?!

Oh no, I did my own- I wanted to do my own, I would of maybe wanted Vivienne Westwood or Alexander McQueen but then I thought, you know what ‘I'm a designer’ and that’s what I've done this year is design people’s wedding dresses, so I just thought I should really do my own. And anyway, I'd probably only tell them what I wanted to have.

Ooo, so what’s it like? Is it vintage, off the wall or is it quite traditional?

Hummm.. None of them! You'll have to wait and see!

Keeping us wanting more, I see!

Yep, I have to keep some secrets!

Ok, I understand. Let’s talk business- what’s your favourite piece from your new collection?

Erm... I think the jumpsuit. I've done like a kind of sequined jumpsuit, which is all buttoned down with long sleeves, it’s amazing. And I mean it’s very striking, so that has to be my favourite.

Your daughter Daisy is modelling your collection for you, you must be so proud of her achievements?

Oh god, yes! I mean I'm so proud of all that she’s done.

Does your ‘Mum’ instinct ever kick in when you see her on the catwalk modelling lingerie, do you ever want to tell her to cover up!?

Of course I do, it’s true you know, it is that thing where you go ooo my baby!

Do you think the credit crunch will stop women spending on high-end fashion or do you think women should never compromise their spending on fashion?

Erm, I think high-end fashion will suffer. I mean it’s always going to be the extravagant things that are going to go during this time. I think that’s why vintage is great because you can get some great pieces without having to spend a lot of money. I've learned that along the way, I mean I had the credit crunch many years ago, so it’s not a big deal for me, because it’s happened to me before. I've always loved vintage really, because I didn't spend on high-end fashion, because I didn't have the money, do you know what I mean? I've been through it once and I've done it and I've kind of kept going with curbing my spending.

Has vintage shopping over the years influenced your collection and your personal style?

Definitely, it’s the only thing that has influenced me. No, vintage for me wins every time.

Is vintage just your entire wardrobe?

Absolutely!

Have you ever shopped at Primark?

Erm, I don't really agree with Primark, because I’m into FairTrade and ethical fashion and there’s no way people can work to the money that they're given. I wouldn't even go in there.

We're doing an Eco-Awareness Month at FemaleFirst and we think it’s the buzz word around the fashion industry now, what do you think?

Listen in a few years time everybody is going to be doing it, you know it is catching on in a big way.

It’s been great talking to you Pearl, thank you so much!

No, no It’s been a pleasure byeeeeeeeeeeee!!!
