I must admit, Sarah Millican had not been on my radar until I found her DVD in the local DVD shop to rent and thought, what the hell, I like a good laugh, let’s go for it. And laugh was an understatement! She is not near the knuckle but straight through it. From the moment she began her act in her recent DVD Chatterbox, she had me glued. I was left thinking, ‘should I be laughing at this?’, but her delivery was one I had never really seen of a female comedienne before. She was shameless and talked about those things that we all choose to avoid. The response from the audience was immense and showed how talented she is at captivating a crowd. Her girl next door quality appealed to me as she addressed issues that I can certainly relate to and laugh about with her. Touching on subjects such as weight, cakes, Geordies and the embarrassing side to sex, everyone in the audience could find something they had a common ground with.
She was not afraid to laugh at herself too, which can sometimes be absent from other’s performances. I was pleasantly surprised at how much of a fan I became of hers so quickly and watched her DVD all of four times in a short space of time. She can cheer you up in seconds with her witty and rude banter.
Her new tour ‘Thoroughly Modern Millican’ kicks off in autumn 2012 in Liverpool – Philharmonic, but you had better be quick as many of her venues are sold out, including this one. I alas was far too late in buying my ticket but I will certainly be seeing he in the future, I will make it my aim. This is not one to be missed and if you have not already seen her DVD, go out and buy it now, for if you need cheering up, want a laugh with your friends or battle with your partner over the good and bad reasons to be a man or a woman, this is the one for you! One cautionary mention is that I watched it with my parents and was utterly embarrassed at having to sit though some of the jokes, not knowing whether to laugh or look outraged, so maybe watch separately and compare relevant notes afterwards! As she says on her Chatterbox DVD, ‘I am a lot ruder than I am on TV!’, True, very true!
