Kicking off a whole new superhero franchise is tough as you have to introduce characters and backstory - and in the case of this movie other worlds and races - and, like we have seen in the past that can all be a little tricky.
And that sadly proves to be the case with Green Lantern; ok in parts but just gets bogged down with characters and relationships and various storylines.
In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, an elite, powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps.
Warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him the ability to create anything his mind can imagine. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan (Reynolds).
Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before.
Sadly this movie seems to have focused too much on the CGI aspect of the movie - it really is all about the way that it looks - character development and plot; which are quite important in a movie, just seem to have been slightly forgotten about.
Don't get me wrong the outer space elements of the movie do look great - but we are introduced to this world and these characters only to have Hal Jordan fight the evil alone, which begs the question what was the point in the first half of the film?
In theory Ryan Reynolds is the perfect choice for the central character of Hal but none of the charm that he has showed in so many other roles was able to come through in this and it really is more about him flashing his pecs than his acting muscles.
He does the best with what he is given but even his star power really cannot stop this from descending into rather a dull mess.
And that is the movie's problem it is just a bit too boring, sure there are some moments of excitement, but they are too few and far between.
Sadly Blake Lively is desperately underused and is there as a bit of eye candy more than anything else while Peter Sarsgaard's role as Dr. Hector Hammond is just totally weird!
Green Lantern, much like Thor, was always going to be a trick movie to bring to the big screen as it is not an entirely human story - but Thor did find the right balance where Green Lantern has just gone into silly territory.
There are some moments in the movie that stand up well - and I's sure that the kids are going to love - it the film pales in comparison to the efforts that Marvel have put out this year.
