Silent House DVD

Starring: Elizabeth Olsen, Adam Trese, Eric Sheffer Stevens

Director: Chris Kentis & Laura Lau

Rating: 2/5

Elizabeth Olsen is one of the most exciting young actresses working in Hollywood at the moment and with Silent House she tackles the horror genre really for the first time.

Sarah, her father and uncle have returned to their dilapidated Victorian house in the countryside to repair it to be sold.

Over the course of 88 harrowing minutes the audience experience firsthand the terror and panic, as seen through Sarah’s eyes as the horror of the evening unfolds.

Shot in real time it soon becomes apparent after a visit from a childhood friend Sarah cannot remember, that all is not as it first seems in the house, with cracks in the walls being the least of the family’s worries as their past returns to haunt them.

First and foremost Olsen really is very good in this movie as she gives a terrified performance as Sarah.

And the first hour of the film where Sarah and her family are terrorised are great as the house almost seems to come alive and close in around her as she tries to escape.

Plus there are some great jumpy moments as directors Chris Kentis and Laura Lau - who were behind Open Water - really do ramp up the tension.

But the reveal at the end of the movie is a major disappointment and sees the movie loose all of it's individuality as this is a story that we have seen done a hundred times before.

Olsen really is the best thing about this movie but sadly the 'we have seen it all before' aspect of the script really does let down her talent.

Silent House did have potential to be one of the best horror movies of the year - let's face it there haven't been any that have really stood out - but the final twenty minutes were a real disappointment.
