Checco Zalone's new film What a Beautiful Day has become Italy's biggest-earning film.

It has surpassed Roberto Benigni's beloved Life is Beautiful thanks to fans who flocked to cinemas across Italy.

Reports suggest that the film passed Life is Beautiful's record earnings of £27.8 million during screenings on Sunday.

The film was released earlier this month and sees Zalone playing a man hired to guard the Madonnina statue on the top of Milan's Duomo Cathedral.

What a Beautiful Day has already claimed Italy's biggest weekend opening ever, even beating James Cameron's blockbuster film, Avatar.
