Caroline Kennedy, daughter of John F. Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy, has given permission for an American TV network to broadcast unheard tapes of her mother opening up about her father and his death just months after his assassination.

The interviews were conducted by historian Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. in early 1964 after the U.S. leader’s death in November 1963.

The tapes have been kept private for nearly 50 years and will be aired for the first time in a TV series and radio programs later this year.

Jackie Kennedy, later known as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and who died in 1994, rarely spoke about her husband or her time in the White House.

The tapes with provide a one-hour 20/20 TV special hosted by Diane Sawyer, a book titled Jacqueline Kennedy: Historic Conversations on Life with John F. Kennedy and many other programs.

Caroline Kennedy says in a statement, “It is a great privilege to be able to share these recollections with the millions of people who admire my parents. My mother took very seriously the obligation to preserve and document the history of my father’s administration - and these interviews are the result. I am honoured to play a small part in that effort by bringing them forward in connection with the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy administration.”
