Nicole Kidman Awarded Damages In Chanel Libel Case....

Actress Nicole Kidman has won an apology and "substantial" damages from a British newspaper after it claimed she had jeopardised her position as the face of Chanel by wearing a rival fragrance.The Daily Telegraph alleged the star had upset the revered fashion house by preferred Jo Malone's White Jasmine & Mint scent to Chanel No 5, which she endorses under a multi-million-dollar contract.John Kelly, Kidman's solicitor, said the actress had suffered considerable embarrassment and distress over the story, printed last month (Nov07), which claimed the 40-year-old had worn the rival perfume at the London premiere of new movie The Golden Compass. He added the story wrongly suggested Kidman had acted in an unprofessional and disloyal manner, flouting her contractual obligations to Chanel.Kidman has been awarded undisclosed damages, all of which she is donating to the United Nations Development Fund for Women. The actress was not at London's High Court to hear the settlement of the libel case.It comes a week after the paper published a retraction last Friday (07Dec07) offering "sincere apologies" for embarrassment caused to the actress. David Price, of the Daily Telegraph, says the publication "accepts the allegations are untrue and ought never to have been published".
