Casserole is Britain's top comfort food
The simple casserole has beaten competition from chocolate cake, beans on toast, and macaroni cheese to be named Britain's number one comfort food.
In a survey, the covered dish received over a fifth of votes to be crowned first place, closely followed by pudding favourite chocolate cake in second place, and shepherd's pie in third.
A quarter of those polled said that they replace their traditional Sunday roast with a casserole when the winter weather rolls in. However, it's not just the colder weather that makes people turn to their old favourite meals - nearly a third of Brits agreed that the tough economic climate makes them nostalgic for meals they had as children.
Also in the top ten 'winter warmer' dishes were the simple beans on toast, and famous British dessert bread and butter pudding, in the survey carried out by supermarket Asda.
Jim Viggars, Head of Meat Quality at Asda, said: “With a continued uncertain economic outlook, coupled with shorter days and lower temperatures, it’s no wonder that shoppers are turning towards familiar family foods that warm the heart.
