Some of Marvel's finest superheroes and villains come together in Disney Infinity 3.0 through the addition of the new Marvel Battlegrounds playset, with a figure of Captain America - The First Avenger included, and further characters such as Black Panther and Ant-Man available at extra cost.

Using the Battlegrounds pack unlocks an all-new story mode of around an hour's length, where evil forces are working to pit some of Marvel's most famous characters against one another. It's a nice little piece, the kids will enjoy it with multiplayer options now available for up to four separate players for the first time ever in Disney Infinity, but when it all comes down to it, the play set's story mode is simply a series of 12 quick-to-be-over brawls. The arenas you go through are beautifully thought out with changing area dynamics to alter gameplay with each turn. For example, in one of the first you may want to keep off the train tracks before the train itself comes to clear you out of the way...

If you've got multiple Marvel characters for 3.0, or for any of the Marvel games that have come before in Disney Infinity, it's worth playing through with each of them to discover unique and different endings. What happens to your Captain America at the end is not what would happen if you choose to play with your Disney Infinity 2.0 Thor, for example.

This is a play set that offers a lot of fun, but is beyond a shadow of a doubt aimed primarily at the young male population. A lack of female representation means that only two out of the 26 playable characters on offer are women - Black Widow and Gamora. There are other female characters included in the game's story, but they're unfortunately not playable.

Highlights come in the challenges available, where your biggest tests are most likely to be revealed through 28 unique missions. Anything you earn through these missions in the form of sparks or experience is transferred for use in your Toy Box, with each character being granted special awards only for them, including Toy Boy toys and costumes available for use in the battle arena.

Experience points raised throughout the game are now available to apply to any character of your choice. Despite that freedom, the abilities of the characters are already set in stone when it comes to the Battlegrounds gaming, and so things can only be switched in the Toy Boy. Experience in story gameplay isn't something you should be focused on.

Each week and refreshing each Thursday, three free Marvel characters are available for unlimited use in-game, with those logging in to play with a Disney ID account gaining access to a bonus fourth character. Trial tokens can also be collected in gameplay to unlock characters of your choice at any time.

The Marvel Battlegrounds Play Set is a worthy addition to the Disney Infinity franchise here with 3.0. It's a lot of fun for the fans, but could do with some female additions going ahead if it's going to appeal to some of the young girls that love Marvel just as much as the boys.

Disney Infinity 3.0's Marvel Battlegrounds Play Set is available now. Additionally, a new Marvel Battlegrounds themed Power Disc Pack is sold separately, containing four new discs to add yet another layer to the Infinity 3.0 experience.
