The streaming company has emerged as one of the most high-profile media companies in world over recent years, and Netflix is now eyeing an expansion into a new market.

The firm has approached senior figures within the gaming industry to create a subscription service, according to the Information, a tech news site.

However, at this stage, it's not yet clear whether Netflix will develop games itself or whether it will look to outsource that responsibility.

The company has also yet to decide whether its gaming service would use streaming technology or whether it will look to create apps for downloads.

Netflix currently has more than 200 million subscribers around the world and its possible entrance into the gaming market could be huge for the industry.

Rumours of Netflix's entrance into the industry come shortly after Nintendo confirmed it recorded its best ever operating profit in 2020.

The gaming giant also achieved its second-best year in terms of revenue, hitting $16.6 billion.

The company recorded an eye-watering $6 billion in operating profit, although the firm expects a decline for the current financial year.

Nintendo's fortunes were boosted during the pandemic due to increased sales of the Switch, as well as the huge success of 'Animal Crossing: New Horizons'.
