2016 has been a year to remember for Xbox gamers, with a raft of exciting new releases hitting the shelves over the course of the last 12 months. Here, though, we're going to take a look at the top-five releases of the year on the Xbox One, and we'll start with an iconic franchise.

FIFA 17

FIFA 17

FIFA 17 - released in September by EA Sports

This particular edition of the ever-popular series is, in fact, the fast-selling game in the history of the franchise. And the success of the much-discussed soccer game can largely be attributed to the new Journey mode, which allows gamers to assume the role of Alex Hunter, a fictional character who is trying to establish his reputation in the Premier League.

The character, voiced by Adetomiwa Edun, has helped to ensure that FIFA 17 is markedly different from earlier editions of the game. But even if you don't wish to assume the role of Alex, you can still become your favourite team and try to realise your long-held sporting ambitions from the comfort of your living room.

Battlefield 1 - released in October by Electronic Arts

This first-person shooter game has been well received by critics since its release and is among our best five games on the Xbox One for 2016.

The bulk of the praise has centred on its World War I theme, multiplayer modes and visuals, as well as its single-player campaign. The impressive multi-player mode actually allows for up to 64 gamers, while the squad system allows a group of players to enter and leave game servers at the same time.

Titanfall 2 - released in October by Electronic Arts

The sequel to 2014's 'Titanfall', this game is widely considered to be the better of the two and among the top releases of this year. The improved reviews can be largely attributed to a deeper single-player campaign and multiplayer multi-player mode.

The game itself centres on the story of an infantry soldier named Jack Cooper, who wants to be a pilot of a Titan, which are used for war. 'Titanfall 2' is a real thrill and is sure to get your pulse racing like few other releases of 2016.

Dead Rising 4 - released in December by Microsoft Studios

Set on Christmas Day and based in Willamette, Colorado, 'Dead Rising 4' is unlike its predecessors because it does not feature a timer system and story co-op gameplay. But as is the case with the other games in the franchise, 'Dead Rising 4' features an open world setting.

The narrative of the game is set some 12 months after the zombie outbreak in Los Perdidos, California. Then, Frank West, a college teacher, meets one of his students, Vicky Chu, who convinces him to help her investigate the site of the first zombie outbreak.

Notably, the Christmas-themed release is a timed-exclusive on Windows 10 for three months and a year on the Xbox One console.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare - released in November by Activision

Another first-person shooter game in our list, 'Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare' is the thirteenth primary installment in the popular series. But it has proven to be divisive among critics and fans, winning awards but all being labelled as too futuristic by others. Despite this, 'Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare' sold 1.8 million copies in its first week and would go on to become the top-selling title on the UK sales charts.

Although the game boasts a lot of strong similarities to earlier editions in the series, ' Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare' also features a new setting and new gameplay components, like zero-gravity environments.
